How complicated is an EV conversion from a technical and legal standpoint?

An EV conversion is a very technical venture. You will need to be electronically and mechanically competent. There will also be some fabrication involved. You will need to have a basic grasp of thermal management, electrical principles and the functional dynamics of vehicles. Older conversions can be re-registered as a fuel type change to Electricity. The MOT is unaffected. There are currently no standards enforceable around the conversion industry, but this may change at any point. So seek advice or attend our L2/3 course to learn more. Insurance must be adjusted to take into account your conversion. Whilst it is not illegal in any way to carry out a re-powering of a vehicle, an inspection of your vehicle by the DVSA could be triggered by you trying to change the V5C from petrol/diesel to electricity. Do not make any modification to your chassis and check the Radically Altered Vehicles pages on the Gov website for guidance on what to and not to do.
